What are the Research Grants – Short-Term Grants?

The Research Grants – Short-Term Grants are funding programs that support foreign researchers who want to carry out a research project or continue their education in Germany. The grants are open to applicants from all disciplines and countries as long as they have a convincing and well-planned research proposal that has been agreed with an academic supervisor at the prospective German host institution.

The grants cover a period of one to six months, depending on the project and the applicant's qualifications. The grant amount varies from 861 euros to 1,200 euros per month, plus additional allowances for travel, health insurance, research, and language courses.

Who can apply?

The Research Grants – Short-Term Grants are mainly aimed at doctoral candidates who have started their doctorate within the last three years. However, applicants who have completed a master's degree or a diploma can apply if they prove their exceptional academic achievements and intention to pursue a doctoral degree.

Applicants must also meet the following requirements:

•  They must have a university degree equivalent to a German master's or diploma.

•  They must have a good knowledge of the language of instruction (German or English) or the language of the research project.

•  They must not have lived in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application.

How to apply?

The Research Grants – Short-Term Grants application process is online via the DAAD portal. Applicants must register on the portal and fill out an online application form. They must also upload the following documents:

•  A curriculum vitae

•  A list of publications (if applicable)

•  A detailed research proposal

•  A letter of acceptance from the academic supervisor at the German host institution

•  A letter of recommendation from a university teacher in the applicant's home country

•  Certificates of previous academic degrees

•  Proof of language proficiency

Some documents may need to be sent separately by post to the DAAD regional office or the DAAD information centre in the applicant's home country. The application deadlines and details may vary depending on the country of origin. Applicants should check the programme website for more information.
