United Nations International Law Fellowship Program 2024

What is the United Nations International Law Fellowship Program?  

It is a prestigious and competitive program that provides high-quality training by prominent international law scholars and practitioners on a broad range of core topics of international law. The program also offers the opportunity to interact with other participants from different regions and legal systems to share experiences and exchange ideas on contemporary issues of international law. 

Location

The program consists of an annual summer course at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, where the participants attend lectures and seminars organized by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, as well as the public international law session at The Hague Academy of International Law. The program accommodates up to 20 participants from developing countries and countries with emerging economies.

Application Deadline

The application process for the 2024 program is now open, and the deadline is 22 March 2024. To qualify for the program, candidates must have a legal background with professional experience in the field of international law and must be fluent in spoken and written English. The program is free of charge, and the United Nations will cover the selected participants' travel costs, accommodation, and living expenses.

Application Requirements

To apply for the program, candidates must complete the application form in English, typewritten, and attach a letter of transmission from a senior official of the institution that is presenting their application. Candidates must also provide evidence of their ability to attend and participate in lectures and seminars conducted in English, such as a diploma of courses conducted in English, a language test certificate, or extensive work experience in English. The selection process will be based on the candidates' qualifications, the scope of their professional duties, the relevance of the training to their professional duties, geographical distribution, and gender balance. Qualified female candidates are encouraged to apply. Due consideration will also be given to candidates from Member States from which there has been no recent fellowship recipient for the program. Only successful candidates will be contacted by the United Nations.
